Traffic pressure is currently very high at several of the world's largest container ports, with 2.7 million 20-foot containers waiting to be unloaded outside the ports. analysis by VesselsValue shows that some ships have been waiting for 18 days.

It may prove difficult for the U.S. and many other countries to stock up on enough retail goods for the upcoming Black Friday and Christmas shopping frenzy. As the global supply chain is under tremendous pressure, there are currently 2.7 million 20-foot containers moored outside several of the world's largest container ports.

More specifically, 409 container ships loaded with 2,732,133 20-foot containers are currently lined up outside ports waiting to be unloaded, according to a new analysis by VesselsValue, with millions of containers filled with retail goods and industrial cargo.

409 container ships! 2.7 million containers waiting to be unloaded outside the port! Plum Hill Terminal scheduled to reopen next week?

Over the past nine days, the closure of May Hill Terminal has exacerbated the global supply chain disruption. According to VesselsValue, as of August 18, a total of 80 container ships, totaling 393,650 teu, were waiting to load and unload cargo at other terminals in Ningbo port. One of the container ships has been in queue for more than nine days, the longest waiting time for a container ship.

VesselsValue's analysis shows that ship queues and traffic bottlenecks are also serious at the Port of Long Beach, California, on the west coast of the United States. There are 33 container ships lined up outside the port, totaling 255,333 teu, and one of them has been waiting for more than 18 days to unload its cargo.

According to another report by SoHo yesterday, delays on the Asia-North Europe route are also very serious. The Asia-North Europe route, which was expected to take about 75 days for round-trip transportation, now takes 100 days or even longer, with ships in the port of Antwerp waiting up to 10 days.

In addition, Maersk will adjust the AE7 service from Northern Europe to the Far East due to the long waiting time for ships in the port of Hamburg.

According to the announcement on Maersk's official website, due to the high density of yards in the port of Hamburg and the particularly long waiting time for its vessels in the port of Hamburg, in order to improve the schedule reliability of the AE7 service from Northern Europe to the Far East, import calls can only be determined based on the availability of berths in the port of Hamburg, and Bremerhaven-NTB (Bremerhaven) will be used as a backup emergency discharge port.

Maersk said the voyage schedule will be updated one week prior to the vessel's arrival in Germany based on the confirmed import call notification. Affected export cargoes originally discharged at the port of Hamburg will be transported through the port of Bremen and loaded onto the appropriate vessel/voyage.

The potentially affected vessels/voyages are expected to be as follows.

Lars Jensen, shipping analyst at Vespucci Maritime, said there is both good news and bad news about the unstable situation in the global supply chain.

Jensen said the good news is that the May Hill terminal, which closed on August 11, is scheduled to reopen next week, however, news of the terminal's reopening has not been confirmed by officials or shipping companies.

Sources said the May Hill terminal will partially reopen on the 24th and fully open on Sept. 1. It is expected that the whole port will resume normal operation in the middle of next month and it will take 10 to 14 days to clear the backlog of box ships.

On the other hand, Jensen said the bad news is that while other terminals at Ningbo port are able to handle 77,000 teu (equivalent to 90 percent of overall cargo volume) of containerized cargo per day at maintenance, delays and ship diversions caused by the terminal closure will continue to affect other ports and cause congestion in the global supply chain.

The current situation resulting from the closure of the Meishan terminal will continue to present challenges in the coming weeks. However, Jensen concluded that the overall situation is not as bad as expected compared to the partial closure of Yantian Port earlier this year.

In addition, according to CCTV news, at the regular press conference held by the Ministry of Commerce on August 19, some media asked, recently, Ningbo Zhoushan port was partially closed due to the epidemic, and there are concerns that this will aggravate the already tight international capacity. What measures will the Ministry of Commerce take to ensure the stability of the global supply chain?

In this regard, the spokesman introduced peak, August 11, Ningbo Zhoushan port after the emergence of the new crown pneumonia epidemic, Meishan port area closed, part of the import and export business was temporarily affected, the local government and the relevant enterprises have quickly taken effective measures, Meishan port area ships have been adjusted to other port operations. At present, the overall operation of Ningbo Zhoushan Port is stable.

Gao Feng said that the next step, the Ministry of Commerce will work with relevant departments, in the premise of good prevention and control of the epidemic, continue to enhance the resilience and risk resistance of China's foreign trade industry chain supply chain, replenish the chain, solid chain, strong chain, while further deepening international cooperation, firmly uphold the multilateral trading system, oppose trade protectionism, promote the international industry chain supply chain and international logistics stable and smooth, and work hand in hand with trade partners to jointly Promote global economic recovery and development.
