Another sign of the growth of intra-Asia container trade is that South Korea's Incheon Port has established new links with Southeast Asia by providing new services for regional links.
On August 12, when Moon Seong-hyeok, the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries of South Korea launched an enhanced five-year plan to revitalize the shipping industry, he pointed out that fierce competition in East Asia-Southeast Asia trade is intensifying.
As Heung-A launched a new service that connects Incheon and Haiphong, Vietnam, and Cheng Lie Navigation (CNC Line), the Asian subsidiary of CMA CMA CGM, will connect Thailand and the Philippines, competition has become more intense.
In August 2020, Heung-A Line, a subsidiary of Sinokor, launched the Incheon-Vietnam Hai Phong 2 (IHP2) service by deploying two 1,000TEU vessels. The weekly shift is Busan-Incheon-Hong Kong-Haiphong-Hong Kong-Busan. The first "Lantau Bridge" arrived at the Hanjin Incheon Container Terminal on August 24.
Also on August 20, the CNC production line launched its China-Thailand Philippines (CSECP2) service at Incheon Port. The operator has deployed five 1700 teu ships and one 1900 teu ship, which are docked at Incheon-Shanghai-Ningbo-Laem Chabang-Bangkok-Laem Chabang-Manila-Hong kong-shekouang-batangas-cebu-cagayan de oro-davao- shekouo-hong Kong-Incheon.
The service started with the Mount Nicholson freighter chartered by CNC, which was loaded at the Sunkwangshin Container Terminal (SNCT) in Incheon New Port.
Incheon Port Authority (IPA) said that 62 container ships are currently calling at Incheon, including ro-ro ships.
Lee Jeong-haeng, Vice President of Operations of the International Freight Forwarders Association, said: “The increase in services in Southeast Asia will enhance the competitiveness of Incheon Port and expand the choices of shippers and freight forwarders in metropolitan areas.”
The IAAF has always used the Port of Incheon as the gateway to downtown Seoul. With the increase in trade flows to Southeast Asia, Maersk Line’s regional subsidiary Sealand launched related services in February.
