Customs clearance is delayed! Government services across Canada have been slowed by the largest strike in the country's history
On the morning of April 19, local time, about 100,000 federal government employees across Canada began a general strike. The Canadian Union of public Employees, with 155,000 members, failed to reach a pay deal with the federal government by Tuesday's deadline, triggering one of the biggest strikes in Canadian history. The Canadian government has recently announced that managers will send written notices to employees in some essential service positions about their roles and responsibilities in the event of a strike.
Several federal government departments in Canada will experience delays or complete shutdowns. Unions expect nearly a third of workers across the federal public service to go on strike. This will delay or halt many public services, such as employment insurance, immigration and passport applications, disrupt supply chains and international trade at ports, terminals and airports, and slow border clearance.
It is worth noting that the strike comes during Canada's annual tax filing season, which is bound to be affected by a large-scale strike. But the tax Bureau says the strike will not delay this year's filing deadline, and Canadian residents still have until May 1 to file and pay their taxes. At present, negotiations are continuing and the two sides have not completely broken down.
