THE Japanese government's financial measures and the moderate global economic recovery have helped drive up first-half container throughput growth at major Japanese seaports.

At the Port of Tokyo, the number of foreign trade containers rose by 6.5 per cent from January-June compared to the same period a year earlier to a reach a new high of 2.2 million TEU. Imports led the growth, increasing 7.1 per cent to 1.2 million TEU as exports surged by 5.8 per cent to one million TEU, reported IHS Media.

First half foreign trade volume at the Port of Yokohama was up 5.1 per cent year on year to 1.3 million TEU, push up by 6.2 per cent growth in export traffic to 685,000 TEU, while imports grew 3.9 per cent to 605,000 TEU.

The Port of Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, handled 1.3 million TEU of foreign trade containers in the first half of the year, up 5.1 per cent year on year. Exports were up 5.4 per cent to 661,000 TEU, while imports rose 4.9 per cent to 608,000 TEU.

At the Port of Kobe, the number of foreign trade containers in the first half totalled 1.1 million TEU, an increase of 5.5 per cent year on year. Container export volumes grew 3.5 per cent to 585,000 TEU, while container imports rose 7.8 per cent at 528,000 TEU.

The Port of Osaka, Japan's fifth-biggest container port, handled 826,000 TEU of foreign trade containers between January and May, up 5.3 per cent from a year earlier. Container exports grew 6.7 per cent at 377,000 TEU, while container imports were up 4.1 per cent at 448,000 TEU.
