An overseas container port -new ZealandPort Taranaki decided to completely abandon and bid farewell to the international container shipping business!
The port suspended container trade service in October 2014 and has since been maintaining container transshipment service. It is estimated that the container transshipment station will be closed by the end of January 2018.
Guy Roper, chief executive of Port Taranaki, said that the introduction of large container ships, the development of inland ports and the increase in port railroad traffic all prompted the company to opt out of the container business.
"With container services dependent on size and throughput, we have been unable to secure enough trade to attract shipping companies as the country's supply chain changes, so we will close container shipping services.
Peter Dryden, Chairman of the company, said: "After examining our position in the container industry and the permanent changes in New Zealand's supply chain, we believe it is not feasible to invest in a future competitive industry."
It said the port of Taranaki will now focus on dry bulk shipping and tanker shipping operations. Please note that there are goods to New Zealand enterprises.
