On January 18, hurricane "Friederike" (Friedrich) attacked northwestern Europe, killing at least seven people, destroying a large number of trees and trucks and stranding wires. In the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, planes were forced to fly and traffic on roads and railroads interrupted.
Deutsche Bahn suspended the long-haul train service across the country and canceled regional rail traffic in several states. The Dutch national railway also halted all its trains for most of the morning of the 18th, except for local services in the South. The neighboring Belgium stopped high-speed rail services to the Netherlands and Germany.
